First-Generation Victory
“I am a first-generation alum both in law school and undergrad and the youngest of three children. Although we were born and raised in Oklahoma, my parents are originally from Wisconsin and moved here when my dad was transferred for his job. Neither of my parents came from any sort of wealth and, as a result of their move, were left without any financial or familial support.
Shortly after my eldest brother was born, my parents decided to risk everything and start their own business. As I grew up, I watched my parents model the perseverance and grit necessary to succeed. This, along with the constant love and support of my family, is what I believe developed my strong drive for both academic and personal achievement. Thankfully, my parents' risk paid off, and as a result, they were able to put me through college and law school without incurring any significant debt.
It is because of my family that I was able to follow my dream of becoming an attorney. My family provided me with the opportunity not only to further my personal success, but also to pass on that success to the next generation.
Before I was hooded and walked across the OU Law Commencement stage, I had no plans of making any gesture to my friends and family. (Frankly, I was just hoping I didn't trip.) Afterwards, I was overcome with pride and happiness for both myself and my family. I raised my fist, looking towards them in celebration.
To me, this picture captures the sense of achievement and gratitude that first-generation students embody when they have not only forged their own legacy but laid the path for subsequent generations to follow.”
